International trends report: Social hostilities on religions

A new study published by the Pew Research Society finds that 27{286427c60984e496d8f2e542e7d21c54ddb5734529e6fb3e21d1c17283afa115} of countries had ‘high’ or ‘very high’ levels of social hostilities involving religion in 2013 (the latest year covered in the report).  

The figure represented a fall from 33{286427c60984e496d8f2e542e7d21c54ddb5734529e6fb3e21d1c17283afa115} in 2012. The hostilities range from vandalism of religious property and desecration of sacred texts to violent assaults resulting in deaths and injuries.

The restrictions included efforts to control religious groups and individuals in ways ranging from registration requirements to discriminatory policies and outright bans on certain faiths.
